Golf Club Buying FAQ

Should I get custom fitted clubs or buy off the rack?

Beginners and casual players do just fine with off-the-rack clubs. Custom fitting matters more as your swing becomes consistent — generally once you're shooting below 90 regularly. The biggest fitting factors are club length (based on height) and lie angle. If you're between 5'5" and 6'1", standard clubs will likely work well.

Graphite shafts vs steel shafts — which should I choose?

Graphite shafts are lighter, which helps generate more clubhead speed — ideal for beginners, seniors, and anyone with a slower swing. Steel shafts offer more feedback and consistency, preferred by intermediate to advanced players. Most drivers and woods come with graphite; the real choice is in your irons.

How many clubs am I allowed to carry in my bag?

The Rules of Golf allow a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag during a round. A typical setup includes a driver, 3-wood, 4 or 5 hybrid, 5–9 irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge, and a putter (12 clubs). You can fill the remaining slots based on your game — an extra wedge, fairway wood, or hybrid.

When should I upgrade my golf clubs?

Consider upgrading when your clubs are 7+ years old (technology improves significantly over that span), when your game has outgrown your equipment (e.g., beginner clubs holding back an intermediate player), or when you notice inconsistent distances and accuracy that aren't swing-related. Worn grooves on wedges and irons also affect spin and control.

Is a complete set or individual clubs the better value?

Complete sets are the best value for beginners — you get everything matched for $200–$500 vs $1,000+ buying individually. As you improve, you can upgrade individual clubs (driver, putter, wedges first) while keeping the rest. Intermediate+ players benefit from building a custom bag with clubs suited to their specific needs.
