Dog Feeding FAQ

How often should I feed my adult dog?

Most adult dogs do well on two meals per day โ€” morning and evening, roughly 12 hours apart. This keeps blood sugar stable and prevents the gorging that can happen with once-daily feeding. Puppies under 6 months need three meals; under 3 months, four meals. Giant breeds prone to bloat should eat 2โ€“3 smaller meals rather than one large one. Whatever schedule you choose, consistency matters more than timing โ€” your dog's digestive system adapts to a routine.

Wet food vs dry food โ€” which is better?

Neither is universally better โ€” it depends on your dog. Dry kibble is more calorie-dense, better for dental health (the crunch reduces plaque), easier to store, and cheaper per serving. Wet food has more moisture (good for dogs who don't drink enough), is more palatable for picky eaters, and is easier to eat for senior dogs with dental issues. Many owners mix both โ€” a base of dry kibble topped with a spoonful of wet food for flavor. Whatever you choose, look for AAFCO certification on the label.

How do I know if my dog is the right weight?

Use the body condition score (BCS) method: looking down at your dog from above, you should see a visible waist behind the ribs. From the side, the belly should tuck up behind the rib cage. Running your hands along the sides, you should feel ribs without pressing hard, but they shouldn't be visible. If you can't feel ribs at all, your dog is overweight. If ribs, spine, and hip bones are clearly visible, your dog is underweight. Your vet can assign a BCS from 1โ€“9 (4โ€“5 is ideal).

Do dogs really need supplements?

If you're feeding a complete and balanced commercial diet (AAFCO certified), most healthy adult dogs don't need supplements. However, some dogs genuinely benefit: joint supplements (glucosamine + chondroitin) for large breeds and seniors, omega-3 fish oil for skin and coat health, probiotics for dogs with digestive issues, and hip & joint support for breeds prone to dysplasia. Always consult your vet before adding supplements โ€” more is not better, and some can interact with medications.

Should I feed grain-free dog food?

For most dogs, no. The FDA has investigated a potential link between grain-free diets and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. Grains like rice, oats, and barley are perfectly digestible for dogs and provide valuable nutrients. Unless your dog has a confirmed grain allergy (which is actually rare โ€” protein allergies are more common), a grain-inclusive diet from a reputable brand is the safer choice. If you suspect a food allergy, work with your vet on an elimination diet rather than guessing.
